Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent a strong statement to cities in his state that seek to dodge laws regarding immigration and instead offer sanctuary status to illegals, and in a phrase, it’s blunt: Don’t even think about it.
“I’m being abundantly clear,” Abbott said, during a recent interview on Fox Business with Lou Dobbs. “I don’t care what jurisdiction you’re at in the state of Texas. You are going to comply with the law.”
His statement comes as cities around the nation have sent out stern messages to the incoming White House administration about their intents to keep their sanctuary status, regardless of what laws and policies Donald Trump might issue to the contrary.
Abbott, who heads up a state that already regards illegals with harsh eyes, made clear Texas wouldn’t be playing that.
From the Blaze:
“Texas is taking a hard stance on illegal immigration, and one of the measures the state is taking is to make sure sanctuary cities hurt so badly they stop harboring those who come here unlawfully. Not long ago, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sat down with the Lawrence Jones of The Blaze and discussed some plans the state has moving forward.
“But now Texas Governor Greg Abbott himself is putting his foot down.”
An estimated 300 cities in the nation offer sanctuary to illegals. But as Abbott made clear on Fox, jurisdictions in Texas won’t be joining that list.
“I’ve already issued a governor’s order cutting off funding from the governor’s office that was going to some of these jurisdictions,” Abbott said, during the interview on Fox. “But secondly, we’re going to pass a ban on sanctuary cities in the state of Texas that will put real teeth in this, compelling local officials to apply the law of the United States of America.”
